Working Towards a Less Waste Home

This is a list of products bought about yearly before introducing a less waste lifestyle in our home. Everything in orange are products packaged in plastic, either waste or recyclable.

I am not including garbage/recycling bags, as I think they are needed (or something more environmentally friendlier for containg) to contain the garbage. Otherwise loose garbage may get blown by the wind out of our carts, garbage truck journeys, and landfills. Blue bags are recycle.

This second list is the exact same as above, before switching to less waste alternatives. This time it will show which products I have removed, in red. Some have been removed for two reasons: 1. Plastic packaging. 2. Contains chemicals that may be harmful. These ones are more so cleaners or used on the body. Some of other items (in red) have been switched to a environmentally package, such as using cloth produce bags, aluminum cans, my own containers, box or I make it myself.

A lot of the items are going to be very hard to switch away from plastic packaging. For example, medicines. The best I can do is to try picking at least the recyclable packaging option, or if I can not find it in a recyclable package, then I must wait for the companies to get into gear and develope new ideas for more environmental friendly packaging and put them into place.

I have been busy trying to make some items myself and actually making new snack ideas for example; granola bars, nuts and bolts, trail mix, yogurt drinks, homemade bread and sub buns, Raison brand cereal, cookies, cake. Reusable wipes and cleaner mixture for wipes, produce bags, playdoh. Also make-up foundation powder, bronzer and eye shadow made with Arrowroot powder and two shades of cocoa powder. No post yet on that one.

  1. thank you so much, your list is inspiring.
do you have tips for navigating bulk barn and their reusable container program? I haven’t tried it yet but am feeling inspired now 🙂

    1. Hey there! Be inspired!!! It is so easy to shop at Bulk Barn with your own containers! Half of my groceries come from there now and we have expanded our diets to other foods. I want to learn more recipes to further expand as well, like beans and lentils, quinoa and such!

One thing that one needs to understand, is that Bulk Barn does not advertise package free, but bulk options. Buy the amount you need! A lot or a tiny amount like a tsp of whatever ingredient you need. Some of their products come in paper bags and others in large plastic bags (bulk amount). Bulk Barn themselves are not waste free, but you can buy the amount YOU need, for example, you would not buy a kg amount of gummy worms at the store for home, you would need less. I remember when I saw an employee filling up some bins and with kg size plastic bags of products. I was so taken aback and dissapointed. But, I would never buy that much anyways, many customers “share” that kg bag, which is a good thing. At that point, its up to the manufactures and companies to change the packaging.

So, basically you go to Bulk Barn and go straight to the cashier. Give them your clean containers and they will tare them on the scale. A grease type pencil will be used to write the tare weight, it’s washable with a bit of “elbow grease”! Fill the containers with what you want and go back to the cashier. They will weigh the product and take off the tare weight so you are only paying for the product weight.

I started out saving our large yogurt containers, they were the perfect size for dumping products into. You want a wide mouth opening, otherwise the product can be difficult to put into the container. The containers needs to be weighed (for taring) every visit. Multiple same containers and covers can be different weights. To avoid having to weigh the containers all the time, I labeled the cover and container to match with the product that will be used in that container always. I got to a point to having too many containers to fumble through. Over 30 of them! So I made cloth bags from old curtains, I did that awhile ago for produce. Its so simple! Once they were made, I got them tared and permanently wrote the tare number on the bag. Once emptied into my at home containers they will go in the wash with the next load of laundry. I keep a bag designated for Bulk Barn holding my cloth bags. I have a few sizes of cloth bags. Small, med and large.

I highly recommend containers for powdered products and coffee!! The powders stick to the cloth bag and gets quite messy and the coffee smell will “leach” onto surrounding products changing the taste! I did that with almonds! It wore off after a day or two though.

I buy peanut butter and coconut oil in a wide mouth container, like a butter dish.

Prices, where I am, are cheaper at Bulk Barn for the most part. Some items are a bit more pricey, but its worth it as I know I am saving on other products and buying it plastic free. Check out the unit prices to compare products at different stores if you like. I did 3 different times and here is the link.
