Rocky Road Squares.

The start of Christmas baking! Rocky road squares. Such an easy recipe!! Jack helped me today!

Layer a 8×8 dish with parchment paper and Graham crackers. Melt in a sauce pan .5 cup butter, 1 cup milk chocolate chips. Add 1 beat on egg and 1 cup of icing sugar. Take off heat. Combine well. Once cooled add 2 cups of marshmallows and fold. Pour mixture on top of crackers and add sprinkles if desired on top. Refridgerate until cool and firm.

Remove from dish and take off parchment paper. Cut into bite size peices and store in a air tight container.

Update.

I made a second batch without the parchment paper. I just cut the edges along the pan and the whole thing just slipped out. Yay!!!

Also, Peanut butter balls, no parchment paper. I just put the pan holding the fresh balls into the freezer to cool down quickly and harden, then they just pop off the tray. Yay!!

Homemade Cleaner

I’m dropping chemical cleaners at home. I have been cleaning our home with 10% vinegar for a few weeks now. Awesome! Mostly I would wash surfaces with soap and water, then spray with vinegar and let it sit.

All I do is take an old spray bottle, mix together equal parts water and vinegar. Ta-da!

Do not add baking soda while cleaning with vinegar. Together they will become neutralized, an not work as they are supposed to separate.

Nuts and Bolts

When my brother and I were little, my dad would make us this delicious snack! It was his moms recipe, my Nanny. God love her! I wonder how far back this recipe goes!

Our house is in need of more snacks so I thought this recipe was the perfect fit as I can get these main ingredients from the Bulk Barn, no bags!

In a small sauce pan, combine 1/4 cup melted butter, 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce, .5 tsp celery salt, .5 tsp garlic salt, .5 tsp paprika and .5 tsp onion salt.

Pour this mixture over 2 cups Cheerios, 2 cups Shreddies, 2 cups pretzels (I break mine in half) and 1.5 cups salted nuts. Place on large baking pan. Bake at 250 for 1 hour, mixing every 20 minutes.

So yummy!!!

Harvey Wallbangers

Last night Chris took a trip to the liqure store. Not for beers but liqure. He could not remember the last time he bought that!

We are 10 years married, November 15th, 2008, and have not been able to share the experience together of having a few drinks! Except that one time on our 1st anniversary!

Reason being, firstly, we were set up by our moms! Not in a bar or party. Our moms. Sweet! We moved in together here in Summerside and shortly after our first pregnancy happened and engagement! What a happy time! Would not change a thing! Nothing!

So that being said, I was not drinking while pregnant. I was not drinking while breastfeeding either. That only lasted about 6 months and formula was used. So our first anninversary we went out together in Charlottetown at Baba’s bar. This was the last time I drank with Chris!

Sometime after, pregnancy #2! Breastfeeding for a year. Pregnancy #3, #4, and #5 and breastfeeding each child, each with a 2-3 month window of not pregnant or breastfeeding in between. Not much time for any fun!

So here we are, year 10. I’m not pregnant. I’m not nursing. I got some freedom! We were low on grocery items and did not have the ingredients to make my favourite drink, Bahama Mamas. We thought about my dad and a memorable drink he makes. Harvey Wallbangers!

We each had 4 drinks! 8 shots of liqure each. Within an hour or two. I don’t really remember. Oh what fun!! We talked and talked and laughed and laughed! Oh the social we were missing all these years! I was pretty tipsy! But not overly, well kind of. Hahaha.

Oh yes! I have to mention this! I was laughing so much, I pulled a muscle (or ligament) in my neck! Right beside my throat! Hahaha!!! It hurt to swallow and talk. But it was so funny!

Thank you Chris for giving me a great night! Xoxo

Then and Now Part 2

I have made a list, a long list, of the items in our home. I kept track of the items we purchase on a regular basis (yearly) for our grocery+ needs. The “Before Less Waste” is what was purchased before going with less waste. I compared this list to another list made for the time I am trying to use less plastic, the “July-October”. The third list is where we currently are.

A lot of our products at home have changed, but I think it is for the better. By changing what I buy (where and how) I find we are eating healthier too!! I would love to be able to make much more things from scratch, but a person only has so much time for everything, especially with a large household to look after as ours!

Less Waste Party

Today we celebrated Thomas’s 2nd Birthday!! Our norm for decorations include balloons, streamers, plastic “Happy Birthday” signs, and all that hung up with tape. Presents usually wrapped or put into gift bags packed with tissue paper.

Though, I have not bought a gift bag for years! The amount we get from family and friends is enough to keep reusing for years!! Two or three years ago I took all the gift bags and split them up between family, just to get rid of them. So many!! I am almost at that point again!

Tissue paper is bought every couple of years, we also save those from family and friends to reuse.

Plastic or paper cups and utensils were commonly purchased. Sometimes a plastic table cloth was used too, once, then thrown out.

Streamers are always used for Birthdays.

Balloons are an all time favourite! The kids love them! Have to admit, they are fun to bounce around!! Enjoyment for hours and days!

Though, this year is different! Our family is on a new journey. Less waste! Or zero waste. I Have a hard time using the phrase “zero waste”! We are not a zero waste family, but a less waste one!

To replace the balloons, I made paper fans from construction paper. I found a recipe for homemade glue (thanks for the tip from a friend in a group I follow). This is the recipe. Though, I take some cold water and mix the dry ingredients in first before adding to the boiling water. No lumps! I store it in a jar and use a paintbrush to apply.

My process includes taking a sheet of paper, what ever size, and make your first fold for the fan. Unfold and add a bit of glue and press it firmly back down.

  • Flip the paper over as you would to continue the fan and add glue to where the paper folds down. Continue until the whole paper is folded.
  • Note: put the glue in the centre, not all along the strip.
  • Next, add glue all along one whole side and fold in half.
  • I like to slightly sit on this piece to make sure it holds together good! Optional.
  • Repeat 2 more times until you have 3 fans.
  • Glue each fan to one another, firmly pressing them together.
  • Once they are together you will have a circular decoration!
  • I sewed some thread to secure a line to hand up. I hung mine on curtain rods.

Yes, streamers are compostable, but they still come wrapped in plastic. I want and can avoid that by making my own kind. FYI, the construction paper I am using came without any wrapping and is the biggest stack I could find. 250 sheets I believe. I also have too many scrap book paper that could get used. Some nice prints there to add some flare!

  • My process for my streamers is to take a number and colours of paper stacked together. I liked using all the colours. But any choice is good for any theme!
  • Once the paper is stacked, cut a circle keeping the papers together.
  • Next, cut a continuous circular line starting outide and work your way in.
  • The bigger the circle and thinner cutting, the longer and more twisty the streamer.
  • A small circle will result in a short streamer.
  • Next, I take the ends that were started with and added some glue to them.
  • I put some glue on the wall/door frame/cupboards and stick the streamer ends to it.
  • With the paint brush I added some more glue to make sure they got coated good!
  • Press with your finger so there is good contact between the surface and paper.
  • Continue until house is decorated!!

Our plastic “Happy Birthday” signs are not going to waste. They are still in good condition even though they are almost 10 years old! I thought there must be another way to put them up besides tape. I already knew what to do! Homemade glue!

I cut off the edges that held 9 years worth of tape (pretty thick!). I added a thin layer of glue to the back two sides and they stuck to wall without a problem!! I was pleased!!

Again, we reused gift bags and tissue paper, though the paper was coming to the end of its use. Thats okay compostable (I just checked!).

I did not give myself time to look for good used toys or clothes. He really already has everything he needs! We did buy some of those items. I’m not too worried about it though! Small steps forward.

I did make the birthday cake. Most times I do. Though, for some reason, I cannot get the icing right. The Betty Crocker pre-maid store bought icing is hard to beat!! This time round, I tried the Bulk Barn kind. Pretty good. Rich. Maybe too much. I will continue looking for the right recipe! Also, I bought a can of decorating icing. Not plastic tube, can! I need to get a good icing decorating kit. Not a cheap plasticky one. Been there, done that. Two uses and it broke.

Our 3 year old, soon to be 4, requested the cake to be decorated like this! Quite the planner!!

Also, no plastic or paper plates, nor cups. Just our home items. Usually parties have those items, but not this weekend coming. Yes, we got a family party to get ready for, and I will be aiming for a less waste one again! Though, I do have some paper plates that could get used, I’m not sure if I have enough plates for everyone. I guess time will tell! Also cloth table cloths will be used! No more plastic ones!

Thomas’s Birthday waste included this. Also a couple plastic links from clothing, and a plastic ring. 8 waste items total.

I already did a test the other day and confirmed it again this evening concerning the homemade glue on the walls and such. Yes it does wash off. Hot soapy water. No problem at all!!

We have 4 more kids Birthdays coming between now and April, and parties. I’m looking forward to finding more DIY decorations ! I would like to find something that will last longer than the paper. Construction paper will rip and tangle and loose colour overtime, quickly. Small steps!

Thinking for the future: cloth wrapping.

Update

Red and black paper, stain white background when glue was applied. A simple rub with bleach cleaned it.

Crayon In The Laundry!

Today I had a mountain of laundry to do! I could not get it done over the weekend and today was the next possible time to do it. No stress! Really!

On my way upstairs to get dressed for the day, Thomas politely gave me a piece of crayon he found on the floor. It was small! Like a centimeter long. Purple. I put it in my house coat to deal with later.

I got upstairs, got dressed and gathered the mountains of laundry from the bedrooms and put my house coat on top of the pile. Yup. You know what happened next!

I sorted the colors from darks and lights and browns. Put the lights in the wash first. Of course, my house coat is light grey. First load finished, I put it in the dryer with the clean diaper stash so together it would be a large load to dry, not 2 small loads.

The dryer finished and I gathered the laundry out of it. To my surprise on the table while I was folding . . . The color purple was showing up! And I immediately knew what happened! About 7 articles of clothing were smudged in melted crayon.

Since there was so little crayon, it spread thinly, not crumbly. This happened a couple years ago with an orange crayon that was in a basket of clothes. Funny, one of Alaina’s tops was a victim of both incidents. The diaper liners and shells were effected. My house coat and tie too. 2 of Jack’s t-shirts, a tiny spot on Chris’s pj pants, and two of Alaina’s tops.

One of those tops really had feeling disapointed!! It was bad!!! I will get to it after!

I googled ways to clean them, and found a page. Though I was not going to use hot water in the washing machine, I decided to try scrubbing by hand with Dawn dish soap and hot water with a rag/toothbrush.

My house coat was coming clean in no time!! I could not believe it!! Worked so well!!

Next came the easy clothing, 3 of the tops and pj pants. No problem!! If I found the spots were still lightly coloured purple, I added some vinegar to the clothing, and it came right out! I still can not believe how easy it was.

Next came the special shirt of Alaina’s. Grammie brought it back with her from Chris’s sister Catherine from Milwaukee. Alaina wears it all the time. Chris and the kids were just face timing Catherine yesterday. They have not done that in a long time and everybody had a great day! So nice to chat with family not often seen! Alaina of course was wearing the shirt and Aunty Catherine got to see that. Alaina loved to show her!

So, getting back to the mess. Here is the picture.

The pictures don’t do justice! It’s so bad! I think I spent 30 minutes or more on this top rubbing in lots of TLC! I kept thinking that “this is not going to work! The shirt is supposed to be white. Its going to turn out pink”.

Here is the end result!

Flawless! I was surprised and so happy!!

I can’t wait to show Alaina when she gets home!!

What A Day!

Busy day catching up from the busy weekend. Where is the coffee!!??

10:00 am starting laundry, mega amount!

Oh dear! My house coat housed a tiny purple crayon Thomas gave me this morning when I was on my way to get dressed. I put it in my pocket and there it washed and melted on my house coat and some other clothing items . . .

Diapers in the wash getting prepared to be stripped overnight.

  • Bread finished at 4:30pm
  • 10:40 am, coffee!!!!
    11:20, second sip = reheat!!!
  • Dishes. Not using dishwasher, not that hurried!
  • 10:40 am, Granola Bars!

        • The crayon mess really took a toll on my day. Probably 2 hours for sure spent on cleaning the clothes marked with crayon.
        • Big Birthday bash tomorrow for Thomas, turning 2! Cake making, decorations need to be put together, Jack still needs to pick up something to give to Thomas. I really want to collect a group of photos of Thomas’ 2 years! Busy day tomorrow!
